If your Advanced eClinical Training (ACT) program includes a clinical experience, you're probably wondering what happens after you complete your coursework. While every student's journey is unique, most follow the same general path—from enrollment and online learning to externship placement, graduation, and career preparation.
This guide walks you through each stage of the process so you'll know what to expect along the way.
Since launching, ACT has helped train more than 10,000 students nationwide and works with 1,000+ clinical partner sites to support externship opportunities for eligible programs.
Note: Not all ACT programs include a clinical externship. Please refer to your enrollment documents or program information to determine whether your program includes a clinical experience.
Your Clinical Experience Timeline
Step 1: Enroll and Get Started
Once you're enrolled, you'll receive access to your online learning platform, course materials, and student resources.
During this stage, you'll:
- Access your online coursework
- Review your program requirements
- Become familiar with your student portal
- Learn how to contact Student Support and other ACT resources
Because ACT programs are self-paced, you'll have the flexibility to complete your coursework around work, family, and other commitments while staying on track toward graduation.
Step 2: Complete Your Coursework
Your coursework lays the foundation for everything you'll do during your clinical experience.
As you progress through your program, you'll complete assignments, quizzes, assessments, and other required learning activities designed to prepare you for supervised patient care.
To stay eligible for externship placement, it's important to:
- Complete coursework on time
- Maintain satisfactory academic progress
- Meet all program requirements
- Follow the policies outlined in the Student Catalog

Step 3: Prepare for Clinical Training
Before students begin working in a healthcare setting, ACT incorporates learning activities designed to help build confidence and reinforce key skills.
Depending on your program, this preparation may include:

Step 4: Become Eligible for Externship
Once you've completed most of your program, ACT will review your progress to determine whether you're eligible to begin the externship placement process.

- Meet all program-specific graduation requirements
Students who have not met these requirements will continue working toward eligibility before placement begins.
Step 5: Complete Clinical Site Requirements
Every healthcare facility has its own onboarding requirements for students completing externships.
Depending on your assigned clinical site, you may need to complete:

- Drug screening
- Immunization records
- CPR certification (if required)
- Confidentiality agreements
- Professional dress requirements
- Site-specific onboarding paperwork

Step 6: Externship Placement
After you've met all eligibility requirements, ACT's Clinical Operations team begins coordinating your externship through Externi, our placement management platform.
ACT works with a nationwide network of healthcare partners to identify placement opportunities for eligible students enrolled in programs that include a clinical experience.
Because every healthcare facility manages its own scheduling, staffing, and student availability, placement timelines vary.
Please keep in mind:
- Healthcare facilities determine placement availability.
- Placement location, specialty, shift, and start date cannot be guaranteed.
- Some placements may take longer than others depending on local availability and completion of onboarding requirements.

Step 7: Complete Your Clinical Experience
Your externship is your opportunity to apply what you've learned in a supervised healthcare environment.
Externships are educational experiences—not paid employment—and are designed to help you gain practical experience while working alongside healthcare professionals.
Your responsibilities will depend on your program, state regulations, and your assigned clinical site, but you'll be expected to:
- Arrive on time and maintain professional attendance
- Follow all clinical site policies
- Maintain patient confidentiality
- Demonstrate professionalism
- Complete assigned learning activities and evaluations
Successfully completing your externship is required for graduation in programs that include a clinical experience.
